Best content optimization tools in 2026, for Google and AI answers

Last updated Prices checked

A content optimization tool helps you make a page more likely to rank and be used as a source: it shows which topics and terms the page should cover, scores your draft against pages that already perform, and suggests what to add. In 2026 there is a second target as well. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews quote pages directly, so optimization now also means writing sentences an AI answer can lift and cite.

What content optimization means now

Classic content optimization is about coverage. A tool such as Surfer, Clearscope or NeuronWriter reads the pages ranking for your keyword, pulls out the terms and subtopics they share, and gives your draft a score as you add them. That still matters for Google.

Optimizing for AI answers is about extractability. An assistant assembling an answer looks for a passage that answers the question cleanly and can be attributed. That rewards:

  • A definition or direct answer first, right under a question-style heading.
  • One idea per paragraph, so a passage makes sense on its own.
  • Specific, sourced claims, with the source named in the sentence.
  • Pages AI crawlers can read. If robots.txt blocks them, nothing else matters. The free AI crawler checker tests this for 13 AI crawlers.

Most tools below now cover both sides to some degree. Several have added AI answer tracking, which tells you whether the optimization worked.

Terradium

AI visibility + AI SEO content · $29/mo (Starter)

Terradium combines AI visibility (AEO/GEO) tracking with AI-written SEO content. A multi-agent pipeline plans, researches, writes and improves 30 articles a month, built to be cited in AI answers, and publishes them to a built-in CMS or to your site through a signed webhook. Each week it checks 15 of your questions on 3 of 4 AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini), reports whether your brand is mentioned and your site cited, and lists what to write next.

Pros

  • Produces the optimized article instead of grading yours.
  • Measures the result in AI answers each week, and turns the gaps into a to-do list.
  • Low entry price with a 7-day free trial.

Cons

  • No content editor with a term-frequency score like Surfer, Clearscope or NeuronWriter. You can't grade a human draft in it.
  • 15 tracked questions, weekly; several tools here track more prompts.
  • No site audit, keyword database at Semrush scale, or Google rank tracking.

Best for: small teams whose goal is to appear in AI answers and who need the content produced, not just scored.

Case example: rewriting a paragraph to be quotable

Here is a worked example of the AI-answer side of optimization. It was written for this guide to show the technique. It is not Terradium output, and we haven't measured its results.

Say a page targets the question "what is robots.txt?". The original opening reads:

Robots.txt is something every website owner has probably heard of at some point. There are a lot of opinions out there about how it works, and in this post we'll dive into everything you need to know, including why it matters more than ever now that AI is changing search.

Nothing in that paragraph answers the question. An assistant has no sentence it can quote, and a term-based grader would only flag missing terms such as "crawler" or "user-agent".

The restructured version:

What is robots.txt?

Robots.txt is a plain-text file at the root of a website that tells crawlers which URLs they may access. Google's documentation says it is used primarily to manage crawler traffic to a site, and that it is not a mechanism for keeping a web page out of Google (Google Search Central).

AI crawlers that honor robots.txt read the same file, so a rule that blocks them keeps them from reading your pages.

What changed:

  1. The heading is the question. It matches how people ask an assistant.
  2. The first sentence is a definition. It can stand alone as an answer.
  3. The claim names its source. "Google's documentation says" is attributable; "there are a lot of opinions" is not.
  4. The AI angle gets its own short paragraph, so each passage carries one idea.

A term-based tool and an AI-answer approach complement each other here. The grader makes sure the page covers the topic as fully as the pages that rank. The rewrite makes sure the key passage can be lifted and cited. For more on this topic, see our post on robots.txt disallow and AI visibility.

Measuring whether it worked

Optimization for Google shows up in rankings and clicks. Optimization for AI answers needs a different measure: run the same buyer questions on each assistant over time and record whether your brand is mentioned and your site cited. Dedicated trackers do this at higher volumes than content tools. See the AI visibility tools roundup, or compare Peec AI alternatives if you want daily tracking.
