Perplexity SEO: getting a page cited in a Perplexity answer, Terradium

What people find when they search this term

The US results for "perplexity seo" and "how to rank on Perplexity" are mostly tip lists from marketing agencies and AI-visibility vendors, plus a search-industry write-up of research into how Perplexity ranks content. The advice overlaps a lot: allow the crawler, write answer-first, use structure, keep pages fresh, earn mentions elsewhere.

This page keeps the parts you can act on and check, and is honest about the part you can't control.

How Perplexity picks the pages it cites

At a high level, Perplexity does what most answer engines do (more in AI answer engines):

  1. It reads the question and may split it into several searches. See query fan-out.
  2. It retrieves pages from the web for those searches.
  3. It picks passages that answer parts of the question.
  4. It writes one answer and shows the pages it used as numbered sources.

Two things follow. A page has to be retrievable before anything else matters. And the unit that wins is often a passage, not a whole page, so a clear answer near the top of a section is easier to use than one buried in a long paragraph. Answers also change from run to run, so one screenshot proves little. See does ChatGPT give the same answers to everyone?

Step 1: Make sure Perplexity can read the page

  • Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt. PerplexityBot is the crawler Perplexity uses for search. A blanket rule against bots, or a firewall rule, can quietly block it.
  • Serve the text in the HTML. Most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. If your content only appears after scripts load, the crawler may see an empty page.
  • Return a real page. Redirect chains, login walls, and error pages can't be cited.
  • Publish an llms.txt that lists your key pages in plain markdown. It doesn't force anything, but it gives crawlers a clean map. See an llms.txt example.

The free AI crawler checker checks whether robots.txt allows 13 AI crawlers, including PerplexityBot, whether your llms.txt is valid, and whether a page is server-rendered. It's free and needs no sign-up.

Step 2: Write pages Perplexity can quote

  1. Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first sentence or two of the page and of each section.
  2. Use headings that match real questions. Write H2s the way a buyer would ask the question.
  3. Keep sections self-contained. A passage that makes sense on its own is easier to lift into an answer.
  4. Use the format the question calls for. A "best X" question wants a list, "X vs Y" wants a comparison table, and "how do I" wants numbered steps.
  5. Be specific and current. Concrete facts, named sources, and a visible "last updated" date beat general advice. Update pages when things change, not just the date.
  6. Link related pages together so a cluster covers a topic instead of one page trying to cover everything.

Step 3: Be the source other sources point to

Perplexity often cites pages that are already referenced by other sites: comparison articles, review sites, community threads, and documentation. If those pages name your competitors and not you, Perplexity is likely to do the same. Look at which outside pages get cited for your buyer questions and work on being included there, through genuine coverage, listings, and partnerships, not paid links.

How to track whether Perplexity cites you

Since answers vary and Perplexity doesn't publish a ranking report, measure the outcome by sampling: ask the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and record what comes back.

  • Appearance rate: how often your brand is mentioned for a question.
  • Citation share: how often your site is one of the cited sources.
  • Share of voice: how often you're cited compared with competitors.

These are sampled, directional numbers. They tell you whether new pages are moving things, not how every conversation goes. Questions where a competitor is cited and you aren't are your next pages to write. For a closer look at trackers, see AEO tracker.

FAQ

What is Perplexity SEO?
The work of getting your pages cited as sources in Perplexity's answers: crawler access, pages with clear answers, and tracking whether it cites you.
How do I rank on Perplexity?
Perplexity doesn't show a ranked list the way a search engine does. Make sure PerplexityBot can read your page, write answer-first sections for the questions buyers ask, get mentioned on the pages Perplexity already cites, and track citations over time.
Does Perplexity use robots.txt?
Perplexity's search crawler, PerplexityBot, follows robots.txt. Check that your rules allow it with the free AI crawler checker.
Can you track your brand in Perplexity?
Yes, by sampling. Ask the same questions on a schedule and record whether you're mentioned and cited. Terradium's AI Visibility does this weekly on 3 engines you choose, and Perplexity is one of the options.
Is Perplexity SEO different from Google SEO?
The basics overlap: crawlable pages, clear structure, and useful content. The difference is the outcome. Perplexity cites a few sources inside one answer instead of showing ten links, so being quotable and being cited elsewhere matter more.
How long does it take to get cited by Perplexity?
There's no fixed timeline, and no one can guarantee a citation. Fix access first, publish or improve pages, then watch the sampled numbers week over week.
