AEO definition: what answer engine optimization means
Last updated Prices checked

AEO in one sentence, and what each word means
- Answer engine: any system that replies to a question with a written answer instead of ten blue links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and the AI Overview at the top of Google are the common ones.
- Optimization: the ongoing work of changing your pages, markup and presence so those engines pick you more often.
- The goal: two outcomes you can check — are you mentioned by name, and is your page cited as a source.
How answer engines choose what to say
An answer engine reads the question, retrieves pages it can fetch, and writes a reply from the ones it trusts. In practice that means three things decide whether you show up:
- Can the engine fetch your page? If AI crawlers are blocked or the content only renders in JavaScript, you are invisible. Terradium's free AI crawler checker tests this.
- Does the page answer the question directly? Pages that open with a clear, quotable answer and then back it up are easier to cite.
- Is it clear who you are? Organization markup, consistent profile links (
sameAs), a named author, and the same facts on every page help an engine connect your brand to the topic.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A ranked list of links | Inside an AI answer | Inside generative search answers broadly |
| What you measure | Rank and clicks | Mentions and citations across many samples | Same as AEO |
| The query | A keyword | A full question | A full question |
AEO usually refers to answer surfaces such as Google AI Overviews and assistants. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the broader name for the same discipline. The measurement and the content work are the same, which is why most teams use the terms together. AEO does not replace SEO: an engine can only quote pages it can find, and good SEO is how it finds them.
How that measurement differs from a position in a list of links is covered in the AI rank tracker guide.
What AEO work looks like in practice
- Audit today's answers. Ask the engines the questions your buyers ask and record whether you are named and whether you are cited.
- Write answer-first pages. Lead with the direct answer, then the detail, in the format the question wants (a list, a comparison, a how-to).
- Fix entity and schema signals. Organization and FAQ markup, author details, and crawlable HTML.
- Track the same questions on a schedule. AI answers vary run to run, so one check proves little. Repeated samples show whether a new page is starting to get cited.
For who does this work and what an engagement includes, see AEO service: agency vs platform. For how the measurement works, see the AEO tracker guide.

Questions
- What does AEO stand for?
- Answer engine optimization: optimizing content so AI answer engines mention your brand and cite your pages.
- Is AEO the same as SEO?
- No. SEO targets a position in search results. AEO targets being named and cited inside an AI-written answer. They overlap, because engines can only quote pages they can find.
- What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
- They describe the same work. AEO is often used for answer surfaces like AI Overviews and assistants; GEO is the broader term for generative search.
- How do you measure AEO?
- Ask the same set of questions on each engine repeatedly and track how often you are mentioned and cited (appearance rate, citation share, share of voice).
- Do I need an agency for AEO?
- Not always. Agencies sell audits and content as a retainer; a platform like Terradium covers the tracking, drafts and publishing as software. The AEO service guide compares the two.
